Girls Rock Glasgow is only possible with the help of our amazing volunteers, let’s get to know some of our 2024 stars who made last years Rock School one to remember…
Name: Beth W (they/she)
GRG Voluntary Role/s: Guitar instructor & Band Mentor
Hey Beth! Tell us a bit about yourself?
I’m Beth, I’m 24 (almost 25) and from Dundee! I’m in a band called Crocodile Tears who make angry punk music about being a woman, gender and anything else I fancy.
Why did you apply to be a volunteer?
I’ve been playing in bands and as a singer/songwriter for the past 13 years (since I was 12!), and grew up around macho tough guys who looked down on me because I was a woman or because I was younger than them. I didn’t want other young women+ to grow up in that same environment and to show them that there are people like them actively in music and art.
What have you taken away from the experience?
I found the experience as educational for myself as the young people. Getting to be around so many talented girls+ of all ages was so inspiring, I couldn’t believe I was lucky enough to be involved. I was probably more nervous than the young people on the first day, worrying about what they’d think of this mad person standing in front of them but it was such a fun and welcoming environment created.
What makes a “good” volunteer?
A good volunteer is receptive to others needs - be it the young people or other volunteers. It’s important to go in with an open mind and good attitude and be ready to put the work in, GRG doesn’t run without volunteers!
What would you like to tell people about Girls Rock Glasgow?
This is so important in our current cultural climate, young women and girls+ need spaces to be silly and express themselves without judgement. Being encouraged to make noise and be expressive is so so critical.
Thanks Beth!
